Information for referring veterinarians.
Hyperthyroidism is a common disease of older cats caused by a benign tumor of the thyroid glands. The excessive levels of thyroid hormone produced by this tumor cause a multitude of clinical signs including overactivity, increased appetite, and weight loss. The condition is relatively easy to diagnose by checking blood levels of various thyroid hormones. This condition can be treated medically or surgically; however, the most widely accepted means of therapy is through the use of a single injection of radioactive iodine. Upstate Veterinary Specialists has partnered with Radiocat ®, a practice specializing in the treatment of hyperthyroid cats to provide this service in Western Carolina. As with all of our other services, your pet must be referred to Radiocat to receive treatment. Appointments may be made by contacting them directly at (800) 323-9729 once you have been referred.
